Green Hotel Deals for Earth Day

With Earth Day just days away, Travelocity has launched a sale on over 60 green hotels offering up to 45 percent off room rates in hotels across the US - travelocity.com/earthday.  Not only are green hotels better for the environment, travelers overwhelmingly prefer them.  Travelocity allows consumers to rate its hotels on a scale of 1-5 smiley faces.  Consumers gave 83 percent of non-green hotels three smiley faces or more--but they gave a whopping 94 percent of green hotels three smiley faces or more.

The Best Time to Go Guide for 70 Destinations

Travel, they say, is broadening. Unfortunately, the recent rise of gas prices may force some travelers to put plans on hold. Happily, it's possible to getaway this spring without blowing your budget, if you know the best places to go. The Go Frugal Blog on FreeShipping.org compiled the high and low seasons for 70 of the most popular travel destinations worldwide to help you discover the best deals.

Before you plan your next journey, check out the The Best Time To Go Guide For 70 Destinations. Here's a glimpse of three exciting travel destinations to consider.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Costly: June to August
Less Expensive: April and May
Summer means hot weather and humid, rainy conditions. The weather is more comfortable in April and May than during the height of summer. The humidity isn't as prevalent, and the summer rains have dissipated. Best of all, as the crowds have not yet arrived, you'll enjoy uncrowded resorts, low season rates and an excellent chance of upgrades.

Ireland
Costly: July and August
Less Expensive: April to June and September to October
The Emerald Isle is known for its rain, so you can expect a certain amount of damp at any time of the year. The weather is likely to be at least as good in May, June and September as in the summer months and hotels are less busy. Spring flowers are at their best in April and May, and October offers a frugal fan's choice of free arts festivals.

Portland, Oregon
Costly: Mid-May to October
Less Expensive: January to March
The Pacific Northwest sees its fair share of rain, but the most popular time to visit is during the summer when braniacs take a break and outdoor festivals are everywhere. Winter is the least expensive time, with fewer crowds and more availability. Second cheapest are the spring and fall shoulder seasons, when the weather is cooler and schools are in session.

Once you've decided on your vacation destination, check out our Best Time To Buy Guide for 101 Products and Services which was first to make its debut in the series of Go Frugal consumer savings guides. Travelocity Awards $5000 Volunteer Vacation Grant

Travelocity (http://www.travelocity.com) believes travel has the power to change the world through experiences like volunteer vacations. That’s why, since 2006, the company’s Travel for Good® program has been awarding eight $5,000 volunteer vacation grants every year. These grants sponsored deserving Americans on trips to new corners of the world to give back with their own two hands. And today Travelocity announced the launch of a new voluntourism grants site, marking a new era for the program. This site allows volunteers to submit video applications for the voluntourism grants and gives travelers everywhere a free blogging platform to share their stories of service.
In the past, consumers filled out a written essay application for the Travel for Good voluntourism grants, and Travelocity employees volunteered their time to vote for their favorite candidates. With the launch of the new video voting process, applicants will now make a video and share it with friends and family for voting via social networking sites. This exciting innovation gives everyone a say in who should win these life-changing volunteer opportunities.
To enter the new grants contest, consumers should:
·         Visit VolunteerJournals.com. The site will walk them through, step by step, the easy process to upload their videos.
·         Then, they can use buttons to promote their videos on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter and send it to friends and family for voting.
·         Each video should explain why the applicant deserves to win and which Signature Trip from Travelocity’s voluntourism partners inspires them.
·         Each person is allowed to vote once a day per IP address and there’s no need to create a profile or sign in, making voting a simple one-click process.
The top 25 finalists will be determined by 50 percent audience support and 50 percent quality of their videos. There are two contest cycles per year and Travelocity employees will select four winners from the top 25 finalists each cycle.

Each winner or team will enjoy a $5,000 volunteer vacation grant, which can be used to take one of the Signature Trips from Travelocity’s official voluntourism partners. Trips include:
·         Doing trail work in Alaska with American Hiking Society,
·         Developing community projects in Tanzania with Cross-Cultural Solutions,
·         Working side-by-side with scientists on a riverboat in the Amazon with Earthwatch Institute,
·         Living in a children’s home in Peru with Globe Aware, and more.
Additionally, VolunteerJournals.com provides a free blogging platform for all volunteers, including stories from past Travelocity grant winners. Travelers don’t need to win a grant or even volunteer abroad to make use of this new tool. From a local book drive to a three-month voluntourism trip, the site gives all volunteers across the globe the opportunity to share their experiences and get more people involved with the causes they care about.
